This December IDS hero, Annie, is just out of the box! She has time and time again proven her commitment to her role as a DSW and has always taken the time to make her client feel special and genuinely cared for.
We’re so happy to have her on our team and look forward to seeing how she continues to shine through and make brilliant strides.
Let’s learn a bit more about Annie!
Why did you become a DSW?
Being a DSW gives me the opportunity to make a positive and real difference in someone’s life. This is a small way I can provide support for my client’s friends and family. Through this role, I am able to make a real change in the lives of people with a disability. I help them gain more independence so that they feel like they can be part of their community. As a result, they are more compassionate and lead more quality lives.
What does a typical day at IDS look like?
On an average day of work, I am always busy and things are always different.
I start the day off by greeting my client, checking communications from the team, discussing with the client about daily activities and coordinating our plans together. This way, I can provide the client with positive support and get everything organised at the start of the day.
I then look over my to-do list and client schedule. I follow a defined routine to get through my duties. I ensure that each of my duties are completed with the utmost care and respect.
Tell us about the best day you’ve had at IDS?
I like what I do every day! I love supporting and helping my clients with daily tasks. One of my favourite days was when my client and I went out for coffee, took lots of photos and laughed a lot! I felt like I was with my friend.
What’s the most interesting thing you have learnt?
There are two things I have learned as a DSW. I’ve learnt that learning a new skill can get you out of a rut. Secondly, every person is different and requires a different kind of care.
Tell us a bit more about yourself.
My hobbies are gardening, reading books, knitting, singing, dancing, looking after babies etc. These hobbies help me relax my mind after an exhausting day. They help me cool down and make me feel relieved. My favourite colour is blue.
What’s your message for other individuals looking to become DSWs?
Feel with your heart!
Get to know them and understand them and then you will be able to best support them. Every day is different but you can help make their tomorrow better.
